APRIL AND SECRETARIES DAY!

FLOWER OF MONTH for APRIL

The humble daisy is the flower of the month for April. Opening and facing the sun, yet closing at the day's end, characterize how the daisy was named "daeges-eaye" or "day's eye" from Old English. This simple flower symbolizing childhood innocence, often depicted in movies with children running through fields overgrown with daisies. Daisies have practical uses. Its leaves and petals are edible and it can also be brewed as a tea to sooth sore throats and stomach aches.

Secretaries Day & Administrative Professional's Week

National Secretary's Day and National Professional Secretaries Week  was created  in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam. Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the position to a company or business. His goal was to encourage more women to become secretaries. Using his skill and experience in public relations, Klemfuss, promoted the values and importance of the job of secretaries. In doing so, he also created the holiday in recognition of the importance of secretaries.
The name of this special day has changed and evolved over the past few decades. But, the importance of recognizing these vital individuals remains. The two new terms in use today are: "Administrative Professionals" and "Executive Admins". The two names sometimes mean different roles and responsibilities in different companies and organizations. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than the original "Secretary" role.
The name change recognizes and acknowledges that the role has changed significantly since 1952, and for the better at that. In Harry Klemfuss' day, these positions were the realm of women. Today, you find males in these positions.
*** NOTE: Since the name change, it is my opinion that the Secretaries were getting overlooked and so many calenders now use both of the names to distinguish the day and week!

The most common ways of recognizing your Secretaries or Administrative Professional(s) today are:
  • Flowers
  • Cards, often with shopping gift certificates
  • Take them to lunch
  • Candies
  • Assorted Gift Baskets  (From: Holiday Insights)

The Christmas Wreath!

Although I found several meanings and traditions for wreaths in general, the traditional Christmas wreath is made by twisting or bending evergreens, symbolize strength, into a large circle which are then decorated with pinecones, and a red bow. I found it interesting as I was investigating the meaning of wreaths and their origins to find that the circle shape of the wreath is made to represent Christ’s eternal love, his strength, and the creation of new life. The evergreens are commonly used to make them due to their heartiness throughout harsh winters and that they denote strength as well as immortality.

Christmas wreaths are a beautiful decoration for your home or office that can really show off your true holiday cheer. Spread that holiday spirit and buy a Christmas wreath for yourself or someone you love! They also make great gifts for clients.

***     Sunny Sunflowers    ***
T152-2A
Sunflowers are becoming almost as popular as roses for gift giving. They brighten any day and bring sunshine to any situation!

The story of the sunflower (Helianthus Annuus ) is indeed amazing. The wild sunflower is native to North America but commercialization of the plant took place in Russia. It was only recently that the sunflower plant returned to North America to become a cultivated crop. But it was the American Indian who first domesticated the plant into a single headed plant with a variety of seed colors including black, white, red, and black/white striped.
For more information on it's long, 3000 year history see:  http://www.sunflowernsa.com/all-about/history/
